Jesus of Nazareth urged his followers to live by two great commandments,
which he said superseded all of the other commandments
promoted in the bible, and the first of these was:

"Love the Lord your God
with all your heart, soul, and mind."

    Pages : [ 1 ] ~  2

What kind of "Christian" would interpret Jesus'
words to mean that he expected his followers
to devote themselves heart, soul and mind
to the kind of god who . . .

A word to my fellow believers :

Before I go on to lay bare a number of problems with the "God" or "Lord" of the bible, I want to distance myself from those who have no love at all for any God - which is why I refer in my title to a particular kind of god, the god who pops up all too often, mostly in the "Old" Testament.-
Unlike those who call themselves "atheists" - which comes from the two Greek words "no" and "god", - I only reject the kind of god who does the awful kinds of things attributed to him in our bible, which is what I expose and deplore on this web site.

Personally, I think atheist Stephen Roberts makes a very good point when he says:  "I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer gods than you do.  When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours."  as is expressed so well in the cartoon below.

Now, here are my reasons for creating a web page to expose the problems with the god or "Lord" that makes an embarrassing appearance all too often in our "Good Book", which many take to be "God's Word" :

  1. This immoral god causes problems for the bible's virtuous god. People are not inspired by the good god, or they lose faith in him, because of what the immoral god says and/or does; and
  2. Some of the followers of the immoral god are moved by that god to be immoral themselves. It may not be as extreme in our faith as it is in Islam, but if you can't imagine how this can happen, ask yourself why - as they are about to commit a totally immoral act of homicide and suicide - so many Islamic suicide bombers shout "Praise be to God"? Are they not giving "Allah" credit for crimes which he has made them view as heroic deeds?

The kind of biblical god that
wise and virtuous people CAN believe in:

Although I haven't created a web page to address this topic specifically, here are examples of pages that show the kind of God that I find worthy of the name, beginning with the earliest books of the Judeo-Christian bible:

And now, back to the topic at hand :

a) Why worship a "God" who couldn't control his temper ?

b) Why worship a "God" who went against his own teaching NOT to kill ?

To begin with, God violated his own laws on numerous occasions:

Now, although one of his principal commandments was "Thou shalt not kill," this God did an awful lot of killing himself, and often directed many human beings to kill many other human beings :

c) Why worship a "God" who recommended and/or tolerated cannibalism ?

d) Why worship a "God" who was cruel to the enslaved ?

Where do these fanatical Muslim clerics get this stuff?

A good Christian scholar friend of mine who has read the Koran twice, and who has given the matter much more thought than I, tells me that much of the violence that has been perpetrated in the name of Islam over the centuries has been inspired by the "Old Testament" texts that I am highlighting on this page – which Muslims share with Judaism and Christianity – as much as from the unique teaching of Mohammed's Koran.
If that is true, then Muslims and Jews should join with Christians in warning all of their followers not to embrace this violent, arbitrary, irrational and/or unjust "god", (who inspires attitudes like the following :)

e) Why worship a "God" who was cruel to women ?

f) Why worship a "God" who was cruel to the handicapped?

g) Why worship a "God" who was cruel to children ?

On the day he was made a cardinal, the future revolutionary Pope John Paul the First gave this daring advice to a youth group: "Never be afraid to stand up for what is right, whether your adversary be your parent, your peer, your teacher, your politician, your preacher, or even your God."

If this verse is taken seriously (which Conservatives must do, if they take the scriptures as seriously as they claim), then these are the inevitable consequences :
  1. Not only are all the "bastard" children of the faithful to be unjustly punished (for something they had no power over), but
  2. all of their children, as well (2nd generation)
  3. their grand-children, as well (3rd generation)
  4. their great-grand-children, as well (4th generation)
  5. their great-great-grand-children, as well (5th generation)
  6. their great-great-great-grand-children, as well (6th generation)
  7. their great-great-great-great-grand-children, as well (7th generation)
  8. their great-great-great-great-great-grand-children, as well (8th generation)
  9. their great-great-great-great-great-great-grand-children, as well (9th generation)
  10. their great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grand-children, as well (10th generation)
(which could number into the hundreds, if not thousands, of offspring).
This also has serious ramifications going BACKWARDS, i.e. ,
  1. Can you be absolutely sure that you yourself aren't a bastard?
  2. How can you be sure that neither of your two parents was?
  3. What about your 4 grand-parents?
  4. What about your 8 great-grand-parents?
  5. What about your 16 great-great-grand-parents?
  6. What about your 32 great-great-great-grand-parents?
  7. What about your 64 great-great-great-great-grand-parents?
  8. What about your 128 great-great-great-great-great-grand-parents?
  9. What about your 256 great-great-great-great-great-great-grand-parents?
  10. What about your 512 great- great-great-great-great-great-great-grand-parents?
When we go back 10 generations, we all have a total of 1022 ancestors. According to the bible, if a single one of these was a "bastard", then there's no room for us or any of our children in "the assembly of the Lord".
